  1. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these articles, and unfortunately, I say I did not know that Facebook had launched a new “Musicians on Facebook” guidebook. However, I’d like to focus more on the interest of the polarization of fans due to the implementation of a political viewpoint shared via social media.

Firstly, I believe that this notion of concealing your true virtues because you want to remain favorable to the audience as a whole to be entirely misleading and in contradiction to our first amendment right to free speech. However, I understand how one would not want to be too radical because it could attract the wrong kind of attention.

But one must think about how much of an impact they could make in the world if they used their platform to inform their fans and countless others on the real issues going on in the world.
One such artist that comes to mind when discussing this is Ellie Goulding.

Ellie has been no stranger to using her fanbase to speak on issues of global warming, political corruption, and the actions one can take to change their own world. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. Ellie is doing just this.

I do understand that this comment on the article was not meant to spark such discourse, however, this discourse is much needed as this muting of one’s voice is a recurring theme in the music industry (I.e. Kesha’s issues with her Producer, and the criminal proceedings that occurred therein).

  2. Both articles provided good information on how to get yourself or your event out there to the public. The second article about using social media was especially interesting. In any industry, I think there are a lot of organizations that undervalue the power of social media as a marketing tool. I think this article gave great tips on how to utilize it to your benefit, specifically as a musician. I think one of the most difficult things when it comes to running social media accounts in a professional setting is maintaining them. Often times other things get in the way, and then the potential benefits of having active social media accounts are not happening.
I found an article that gives some tips on how to make your social media account more interesting. I think things like getting creative with posting can help motivate you to maintain your account. One of the last things the article mentions that I really like is to “get personal”. One thing that fans/customers are drawn to is personal tidbits that make them feel like they’re getting to know you. Obviously the personal tidbits should be within reason – don’t go sharing every little detail to strangers – but even simple things such as pictures of coworkers or pets or personal tips for how to accomplish things can help your followers feel like a community with you. https://www.skyfallblue.com/2016/04/7-ways-make-social-media-posts-interesting/

  3. As stated in both articles, promotion is very important for any event to be successful. Social media has drastically changed the way we all interact and communicate, allowing a vast reach to major targets and consumers. It has also allowed greater access to artists and music than ever before. The second article discusses this very topic but also recommends particular platforms and provides tips to better market and promote themselves online through social media. I think the thing that surprised me the most is the fact that both articles are from the Texas government. I wasn’t aware that the gov’t provides such advice, resources, etc. for musicians.

Anyways, social media is a great tool to use for means of promotion, marketing, communication, interaction, engagement, and the list goes on. I believe it’s so important that I researched further to find more tips and resources on how musicians can take advantage of social media for their benefit. The following article goes in depth about social media promotion, detailing the content you should post and the best social media platforms to use to best promote your music:

  4. I enjoyed both of these articles, because publicizing an event and social media marketing typically go hand in hand. But unfortunately, the keys to successful social media marketing aren’t always natural. I found an article that outlines 13 tips for successful social media marketing. The article also provides links to websites that will help with creating and generating content.

  5. I liked the first article much better because it talked about various ways to put on a successful event, rather than just focusing on one topic and never really taking the conversation forward. I wish that the first one went deeper into how to get sponsorships and who to talk to. As a person who is barely getting started in the music business, a sponsorship can be anyone but if it was explained who we can get and who to target to sponsor the event, it would be more beneficial. I did like how it broke everything down and made it really simple on how to start building a successful event. I think the second link is important too because, as we strive towards stream and keeping everything online, having that deeper intimacy with the audience is important. It is important to focus on more than just one social media outlet to promote your band. Sure, everyone might have a facebook account, but younger demographics don’t tend to use it anymore. This article goes deeper to which social media app is more useful to build your own business:

  6. The articles definitely provide a way to promote live events through social media, but through personal experience with these social media sites, understanding how the algorithms are set up is critical for a user to see something on their feed. As previously, our social media feeds on these sites would be chronological, or by how recent the post is, however more recently they have implemented an engagement/tailored based system where those profiles you interact with most will appear more in your feed; with the intent of keeping you on the site longer and longer. More and more sites are implementing these kinds of algorithms with that in mind, so keeping the feed tailored to a user would ideally achieve that goal. Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc have adopted these algorithms and to learn more about some of the recent changes i recommend seeing the links below. Also take them with a grain of salt as they are more than likely subject to change, which is another challenge that comes with promoting via social media.

And referring back to the personal experience I have had promoting through social media, it is hard to maintain said support because the feeds are constantly changing, so without maintaining and continually almost spamming posts, it may be hard getting seen; and with more people attempting that, the more cluttered everything becomes. Not only that, it is difficult to get the information spread past the group of follower you’d already have unless you again have those who constantly share and like your posts. That is why people have turned to buying views, likes, and shares to stand out and get an advantage in the system, as we spoke about in class. The best way i have found in getting word out is personally through word of mouth. I had much success in going out passing flyers promoting my music around campus in person. However it is just my experience in getting information to the public.

  7. My biggest takeaway from the two articles is that social media is an extremely powerful tool in today’s day and age. Whether bands are using it to promote events or just to promote themselves as a band, there is no question that every band should be on social media. The ability to reach so many people without through the web is remarkable. Apps like Hootsuite make it even easier by allowing you to publish onto all your social media from one place. The articles also mention putting out quality content. This is extremely important because you want the world to see you at your best and to take you seriously. If you want to grow you must put in the effort. If artists have the money, a PR person can handle all of this for them.

  8. Both articles were very informational but I also liked the first one more. How to promote and successfully host an event has something I’ve been curious about. Social media’s influence is powerful and it explains how it can be put to use for your own benefit. Using physical forms of promotion work too, but more people can hear about your event online.

  9. I’m honestly a little surprised by these articles, and for two different reasons. The first one about planning an event is surprising because I never really understood how much work really went into make an event happen, even small local ones. The amount of people you have to talk to, the amount of money you have to raise for the event, and the amount of advertising you have to put out is pretty staggering. It’s no wonder why big festivals take a whole year to get everything ready, and I highly doubt that a year is a lot of time for all of this.

The second one about social media is surprising because of how simple it is. “Get you or your group out there on these platforms and interact with fans,” is basically what I got from that. And the rules are the same for anyone who wants to have a decent page on social media, be careful what you say, post stuff regularly, be sure to put in videos and picture to let your followers know what’s going on, and BOOM you got yourself a nice looking profile.

Here’s a link I found on planning a music festival and mistakes people often make:

  10. With all those social media accounts created, it may become a hassle to have to log into every single one of them, or at least to open up every single one of them, then write/copy what you need to post. I believe these articles left out a great tool to save time and add more efficiency to using social media. This tool being a centralized way of writing one post that would be automatically forwarded to every other social media account. A Social Media Management Tool. This link below provides 15 social media management tools that artists and managers alike can definitely use.

  11. I really enjoyed today’s article’s because I want to help plan and promote festivals as my career! The first article gave me lots of information about the most effective way to promote a festival. Having been to plenty of festivals in my past, I know which ways of all those examples has caught my attention the most. Social media ads, posters and flyers with intense and colorful design, and especially the “after movies” for the ones they decide to work on. After movies are a spliced-up video usually less than 10 minutes of the whole event showcasing the scenery, DJ’s and artists, art, activities and especially smiles and laughter from everyone in the crowed dancing and singing, making you feel like you were there. Those movies always make me want to buy tickets to that festival for the following year so fast!
The second article focussing more on the social media aspect itself is very important because all the best pictures and first-hand comments from atendees come from social media. It is a great way to promote festivals and concerts because millenials are the base of all these events for the most part and almost every one has a social media account.
This article talks about 15 reasons why social media marketing should be a priority among companies to benefit them in as many ways as possible. https://www.lyfemarketing.com/blog/marketing-through-social-media/

  12. Both articles provided me with more information I need to utilize in the future. I am definitely interested in working in live events, so understanding all the small aspects of promoting an event is important. Working for the marketing team at Topgolf, I already have an idea of the “street team” and how important it is to utilize a team rather than promoting everything by yourself. Utilizing a reliable team is essential to having a successful event, but also a successful social media presence. Being able to manage a team I feel is also as essential as the steps mentioned in the first article. If you have poor management skills then you won’t be utilizing the team as much as you could be, but also, you will find yourself doing more work than you need to.
The link below provides some tips on how to be a good manager while managing your team:

  13. I believe that in this day and age, social media is a prime instrument in what can make or break an artist. Many have said, “There is no such thing as bad publicity”, but I have personally witnessed how the snowball effect social media starts can significantly impact an individuals net worth or income.
Because people have much more pride through a screen than they normally would face-to-face, it makes it much easier for someone to be harsh and critique individuals in ways they may have never done before. While most artists are aware they must have thick skin to fit into the music business, this is not the only factor.
Not only are people more critical, but competition is also extremely high now that anyone can essentially do anything, from anywhere. People are now given the opportunity to be creative in many ways they may have not been able to, years ago.
I would say that in today’s orderly chaos of the internet’s takeover, investing in someone or something to keep your social media platforms secure and tapered would be an extremely strategic move.
While individuals may want to handle themselves on their own social media pages, a Public Relations agent could definitely be the reason an artist makes or breaks in this industry.
Social media plays an extremely important role in our music industry in America. It almost appears as if music and social media platforms go hand-in-hand.
Below is a 2015 link which talks about how social media can be the “death” of an artist.

  14. Both articles where very informative. I like the social media because not to many people know that social media can build your whole platform and for me I know that I want to be way more active on my Instagram so that I can be able to get the recognition in fashion or modeling and the tips and advice in this article point out every thing I need to know. Everything is about constant and you have to watch what you post , how you post because all that can play a huge role on how your audience view you.

I found an article that gives tips on social media marketing https://www.google.com/amp/s/neilpatel.com/what-is-social-media-marketing/%3famp

  15. Looking at these articles reminds me how many non-performance jobs are in the music industry. Social media is so common in our generation that I think it’s something that, as a tool, we can tend to take for granted. It’s also really cool to see all the outlets that aren’t so mainstream but play a major role in filtering and simplifying the usage of social media to personalize and advertise. The events side of the industry described in the other article with helpful tips to successfully plan an event is probably my favorite so I looked up an article on how to break into that sector.

  16. It is interesting to see how much social media has overtaken the Music Industry and really how much it can affect your career. Texas Music Office offers great advise and tips for anything involving the Music Industry. A resource that was presumably was not available years ago.

I found the first article to be a little bit more helpful in my own context, describing the level of commitment and dedication needed when trying to organize/ publicize a Public Musical Event. Texas Music Office outlines how important publicizing your event is, in order to ensure it’s success. Utilizing platforms like Radio Stations, TV Stations, press releases, each with incentives put in place in order to attract more attention to your event. The Second article published by Texas Music Office shows artists how much social media can impact their success, giving artists tips and advise on how often and different types of social media that can further propel their career. These factors have only recently surfaced as fast technological growth has impacted the industry drastically.

Here is an Article Showing how social media has affected the modern day music Industry.

  17. Obviously today social media is one of the biggest influences in our society and how people view things, especially when it comes to products and trends. A great way to utilize social media is to advertise using algorithms that way people can promote their products to the right crowd. Concerts, music festivals, tours are all found and promoted on social media. This is how most people find out artist are going on tour and find the dates, even tickets can be found on social media to purchase. Social media plays a big role in the music industry and keeps influencing it even more. It is always important to have a presence on social media especially to gain more followers and attention. Here is an article that talks about influence within marketing on social media which you can find here: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/influencer-marketing-data_b_13302486

  18. It makes sense the mention of social media would be featured prominently in both articles considering how widespread it is. Facebook is mentioned especially frequent and rightfully so, as it has more active users than any other social media platform https://chrissniderdesign.com/blog/resources/social-media-statistics/

It is important however to keep up with current trends and as both articles suggest, keep the intended audience in mind. For many artists, that audience lies between the age ranges of 16-24. Instagram has began making a comeback with active users, especially since they added the Stories feature. The link above also shows that a higher percentage of its users fall under the ages 16-24 compared to any other social media platform except for the far less popular Tumblr. Because of this and by having a much larger emphasis on multi-media posts than Facebook by requring every post to be accompanied by visuals, Instagram has become an effective tool for all kinds of artists. Its prevalent use of hashtags also makes content easily discover-able to it’s entire population.

  19. I’ve found that publicizing events has been heavily influenced by social media. Facebook events began to take control in mid 2010’s and have become a platform where bands and venues can promote shows at little to no cost. However, this impacts the reachability of the band and becomes more social media noise that audiences ignore. Social media has become saturated with these events and advertisements, so audiences have a shorter attention span which requires more creative ways to achieve butts in seats.

  20. Having been in a band before, I had to go through the process of booking shows and creating social media platforms for connecting with fans virtually. I wish we had access to these step by step recommendations back in high school but I would say we did alright in terms of still getting shows and having a decent following on Facebook and Instagram. We got into Reverbnation just as things were dying down but it’s a great platform for connecting with various venues and similar bands. Here’s a link on how you can work on getting more gigs: https://diymusician.cdbaby.com/musician-tips/secret-formula-getting-gigs/

  21. This article was very informative on the process of planning a music related events. It goes into detail about remembering the who your audience is, having promotion and information available to your audience, having a release with details on the event, and more. Its important to pay attention to all the details when getting an event together because the people you often invite hold some importance in your community or in the industry. Creating an event that they enjoy and can see potential in will only help you in the long run for establishing yourself as a distinguished member of the music community.

In the article I found about tip to hosting events, it helps to emphasize similar points present in the article above.

    Link: https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/236715

  22. The difference I found between both articles is that the first one was more correlated to how to promote your “event” and the second article was more on how to promote the artist themselves. Both provided detailed information. I feel that social media has helped artists promote themselves a lot easier and it has been going very well. The outcomes of social media on promoting has more advantages than disadvantages. Below is another article on how to successfully promote as an artist.

    https://burstimo.com/promote-your-music-using-social-media/

  23. These articles were very informative and interesting to me. When branding and promoting an artist, marketing strategies need to be very well thought out. There is a format and system to exposure that works. A lot of effort is required to properly market events and artists, especially when they are just starting out or do not yet have a big following. Social media is a wonderful tool that allows for so much free exposure this day and age, if utilized correctly.
This article talks about how important it is to use social media for marketing purposes!

  24. After reading these articles I feel like I have a better understanding of the important aspects of publicizing an event. The first article went through the Who, What, When, Where and How that you need to keep in mind (who is the audience, what is the event, where is it located, Etc.) and the follow through after everything is done. the second gave us a means of getting the information “out there”through social media.

Here is a video I found by GorillaMusic with more information on publicizing music events:
